July 4th, Las Vegas Style
Now that the celebrations for the America’s 235th
birthday have ended, it is back to work today for a lot of people in the Valley. No sleeping in to nurse that hangover. So, grab a glass of water and two Tylenol and
just remember those sweet times from last night. And, for those of you finding it difficult to
remember last night, allow me to try and refresh your now-sobered memory.
While getting my morning coffee, I overhead a conversation
between two of the gas station’s patrons recalling the extravagant fireworks
shows all across the valley. “I can’t
believe how many fireworks were going off last night” says the man in front of
me. “I know. It was amazing,” comments the woman behind
the counter.
Those contributing to the spectacular coloring of the skies were locals all
across the Valley, as well as five Station Casinos: Green Valley Ranch, Red
Rock Resort, Aliante Station, Fiesta Rancho, and Texas Station. The set up of the “Station Casinos’ 35th
Anniversary, 4th of July Blast” for all 9 minute shows at all five
Station Casinos “took four days and
700 hours […not including the] 100 hours to choreograph and design the shows,
which use nine miles of wire, 63 firing batteries and require 317 firing cues”
(prstations; Villoria).
Other fireworks went off at Basic High School
in Henderson
with all proceeds from the festivities going towards the school’s student
organizations and sports. Mandalay Bay
and the Hilton also hosted their own fireworks displays with a spectacular view
from the poolside.
Prior to the nightlife fireworks, events were occurring all
around the Valley. Summerlin hosted a
parade on July 4th morning in the Trail Village
that had approximately 40,000 attendees.
Boulder City
held their 63rd Damboree Festival, which included its parade along Nevada Highway that
concluded at Broadbent
Memorial Park. This parade is famous for its designated “wet
zone,” in which the attendees are guaranteed to get soaked during the water
fight.
Las Vegas could not wait to get the party started, as was
seen by the early fireworks shows and events happening during the weekend. North Las Vegas held its’ Independence Day
Jubilee on Saturday and Caesar’s Palace set off fireworks on Sunday night.
Maybe these people had the right idea…party during the
weekend, relax on July 4th, and go to work without any painful
regrets. Despite the many hangovers
today, I quote my three-year-old nephew who unwittingly claimed during the
celebrations last night, “Damn.”
